New sector report: 2nd Barometer of Habits and Trends of Petparents in Spain and Portugal 2025

Organized by AEDPAC, with the support of IFEMA Madrid, IBERZOO Propet and the collaboration of AMVAC, ANFAAC and CEVE, this February 27, 2025 at 6:30 p.m., at the fair Iberzoo+Propet of IFEMA Madrid, the presentation will be made “2nd Barometer of Habits and Trends of Petparents.”

This second edition of the study, promoted by AEDPAC and with the technical distribution of HAMILTON, has as its main novelty a detailed comparison between Spain and Portugal, allowing a more in-depth analysis of the behaviour of pet carers in both countries. In addition, the study will address the impact of new technologies in the sector, as well as the economic investment that pet parents make in the well-being of their pets.

Barometer Highlights

  • Feeding preferences: analysis of the growing demand for natural foods, specialized diets and new trends in pet nutrition.
  • Tech-Pet Technology: exploring the use of innovative devices such as GPS trackers, health monitors, video surveillance cameras and specialized animal care applications.
  • Economic impact: detailed study of spending on food, health, hygiene, toys and additional services such as insurance or pet daycare.
  • New market opportunities: analysis of the influence of petparents in emerging sectors such as pet-friendly tourism, digital services and advanced care products.

The presentation of the Barometer will be a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the trends that are shaping the pet market in the Iberian Peninsula.

Surprising facts from the 1st Wave of the study

The purpose of the first Barometer on the new habits and profiles of pet parents in Spain 2024 was to examine emerging trends in pet households and assess the impact of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).

In this context, the results obtained indicated that more than 50% of caregivers considered their pets as family members, even treating them like children and including them in various family traditions, such as photos (74%) and Christmas gifts (71%). In addition, 91% of the participants stated that the presence of an animal significantly improved their well-being and mood.

On the other hand, it was shown that the reform of the LBA and its corresponding new legislation that prohibits leaving pets tied up outside establishments influenced the habits of the Petparents, since 54% of them chose to leave their pets at home when they went shopping.
